If I could remember the number of Westerns I have sent gymnasts to, or attended myself, it must exceed twenty... always very stressful as we balance the desire to succeed in scoring, with the more important goal of personal success, by competing your routines to your own personal best, and enjoying the experience of the competition amongst it all.
So these Westerns are no different than the first ones I attended as gymnast, there is an electric energy, many different gymnasts and coaches and for four days you share the same world. For all of us, we reconnect with other clubs and gymnasts and coaches. You share moments of our personal life, share some struggles and encourage your gymnasts as well as others. There is triumph and there is sorrow, because often the underdog has a success or two, and the very good can even have a bad day or competition..But gymnastics like life is much more about the people you share it with than the end result. As one of our retired gymnasts, shared, with upcoming gymnasts, " I could tell you story after story of friendship, fun, crazy fun, in competition, but it would be difficult for me to tell you how I placed". This is the big truth. So this weekend has been about crazy sleep patterns, and hilarious walks to the bus, training and working hard, cheering other BC team members, reconnecting with gymnasts from other clubs, learning about their life in the gym, and their challenges. Overall it has been a great experience for the kids and coaches. And hopefully another in the many they will have with Victoria Rhythmic Gymnastics
